Iris the Miniature Dachshund arrived with her friend Hazel the Pomeranian, they both came from the same breeder to retire. Iris has previously lived in kennels, she is slowly adjusting to life indoors and getting used to all the household noises and gaining confidence. Iris had a lovely bath when she arrived and was very well behaved.
We have spayed Iris, given her a booster vaccination and she has also had a full dental. Sadly her mouth was in very poor condition and she had extreme dental disease, this resulted in her having 20+ teeth removed which was naturally very painful. Prior to her trip to the vet, Iris was very confident and friendly in foster and her tail didn’t stop wagging however we have found since her surgery she has really retreated into her shell and her behaviour has regressed slightly. It is improving every day, her mouth is settling and her spay wound healing nicely. It is important that Iris goes to a relaxed, calm and patient home who can help her adapt to her new life. Iris is a very dramatic and sensitive dog, if she doesn’t want to do something she will play dead and lie on her back and refuse to move, sometimes giving a high pitched squeal and show her teeth in order to warn you away. She isn’t in pain when she does this, she’s just a girl who likes to get her own way.
Ex breeding dogs can take time to relax and settle in, they need confident and calm handling and their settling in can take time and a lot of effort.
We are currently very busy and rescue spaces are extremely limited – PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU HAVE HOLIDAYS BOOKED OR ARE NOT IN A POSITION TO FINALISE THE ADOPTION IN GOOD TIME – we have a huge waiting list which we are constantly juggling as we hate turning away dogs in need. Please tell us about and breed experience on your application form. Whilst a loving home is SO important for a rescue dog, they will also need structure, routine, boundaries and long term commitment.
THE DOG YOU MEET AND TAKE HOME MAY NOT BE THE DOG YOU HAVE IN 6 MONTHS TIME – THEY CAN BE NERVOUS AND SHUT DOWN, TAKING TIME TO GAIN CONFIDENCE AND SHOW THEIR TRUE PERSONALITIES – THEY MAY PUSH BOUNDARIES AND BECOME HARD WORK BEFORE SETTLING FULLY. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU AREN’T COMPLETELY COMMITTED TO ADOPTING AND DOING EVERYTHING TO MAKE THE PROCESS WORK.
